William Ignatius Phelan Jr
William Ignatius Phelan Jr, 84, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on Thursday March 16, 2017.
Bill was born on February 7, 1933 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Grace Tierney and William I. Phelan. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1950, St. Anselm College in 1954, and then served in the Army for two years at Fort Hamilton.
On August 24, 1963, Bill married Mary Louise Kleindienst from Springfield, Massachusetts. He was employed as an accountant at the Ford Motor Company in Ramsey New Jersey, where they began their family. Bill moved the family to Watertown, Connecticut in 1968 and worked for Timex Corporation until his retirement in 1988. Bill and Mary Lou moved to Weekapaug, Rhode Island and eventually to Vero Beach, Florida for their retirement years. Bill loved the ocean, the Boston Red Sox, playing cards (bridge, cribbage, and pitch), reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Bill is survived by his three children, William L. Phelan and his wife Jodi of Acton, Massachusetts; Catherine Colavecchio and her husband Dan of Colchester, Connecticut; and John Phelan of Weymouth, Massachusetts. His is also survived by his four grandsons, Brendan & Brian Phelan and Patrick & Daniel Colavecchio, as well as seven nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to the staff at Whitney Place and Beaumont in Northborough, Massachusetts for the loving care and support they provided Bill and his family over the last 3 years.
A memorial Mass for Bill and Mary Lou is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Our Lady of the Cross Church in Holyoke, MA, followed by a family gathering at The Delaney House. Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross PO Box 37839, Boone IA 50037.
