Obituary

NORTHBOROUGH, MA
ST. LOUIS, MO

Frances B. (Schmittgens) Winter, 98, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester. She was surrounded by her family’s love at the time of her passing. Frances was the loving wife to Harold Winter until death separated them in 2001.

Frances was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, the seventh of ten children of Henry and Anna (Weingartner) Schmittgens. She lived most of her life there; relocating to Northborough in 2009 to be nearer to family. A devoted mother, Frances focused her life on the care of their four children and in later years, her 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, all whom she cherished. She enjoyed sewing clothing for her children and afghans for the grandchildren’s dormitory rooms. Her family will always remember the wonderful aroma of fresh baked treats from her kitchen and the time spent playing cards.

Harold and Frances were active in their church and community, volunteering and sharing their talents in various ministries. They found pleasure and excitement in traveling the world; visiting all seven continents as they experienced the culture of the many countries explored.

Frances is survived by two daughters, Elaine Cox and her husband Jerry of Northborough with whom Frances resided, and Mary Beth “Mimi” Fuse and her husband Bob of Hernando, FL; her precious grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two children, Susan Bauman and H. Michael Winter, both of whom resided in Saint Louis.

With sincere and heartfelt appreciation, Frances’ family would like to thank the staff of Notre Dame Long Term Care for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Frances during her stay. Please consider memorial donations in Frances’s memory to the Notre Dame Long Term Care - Activity Fund, 559 Plantation St, Worcester, MA 01605.

A funeral Mass and planned time to celebrate Frances’s life will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 11 a.m., at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 17 Joy Ave, St. Louis, MO 63119. Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough, is assisting with all local arrangements.

Elaine and Mimi,
I was saddened to hear of Fran’s passing, and with her the last of the Schmittgens Aunts and Uncles. She was a special person and a special Aunt. I remember fondly the times we shared over at your house on Koch Road; wiffleball, BBQs and putting Tim down the laundry chute :-)
Your Mom and Dad were the best and Im sure they are having a huge celebration in heaven, all reunited in God’s almighty glory. Love you guys and look forward to seeing you at the Memorial Service in St. Louis.

Mimi, Elaine, Dick and Kathy,
Peace to you and your families. My prayers are with you.
