Dennis Luciano, 80, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born in Rochester, New York, on March 21, 1946, Dennis lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, dedication to education, devotion to family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.

Dennis earned his bachelor's degree from Le Moyne College before receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Syracuse University in 1974. He began his academic career at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and then joined Western New England University, where he would spend the next 41 years inspiring generations of students. During his distinguished tenure, he served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and was later honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. To Dennis, the Mathematics Department was far more than a workplace—it was an extended family. He cherished the friendships, camaraderie, and shared dedication to teaching that he found among his colleagues, many of whom remained close friends throughout his life.

Throughout his career, Dennis received numerous awards recognizing his excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Among his most notable honors was the Mathematical Association of America's George Pólya Award in 1987 for a noteworthy expository paper on cryptology that he co-authored. In 1991, he was selected as the inaugural recipient of Western New England University's Award for Teaching Excellence, a distinction that reflected his deep commitment to his students and the classroom. He was also honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America, recognizing his leadership and lasting contributions to the study and teaching of cryptology. These honors reflected the profound impact he had on his students, colleagues, and the broader mathematical community.

Dennis and Michele made their home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, where they spent the majority of their lives together and raised their family. Following retirement, they moved to Northborough, Massachusetts, to be closer to their children and grandchildren, a decision that brought Dennis great joy in his later years.

While Dennis was deeply committed to his profession, his greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Michele Luciano; his son, Ryan Luciano, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Luciano; his daughter, Lauren Tirrell, and son-in-law, Matt Tirrell; and his four cherished grandchildren, Christian Luciano, Julian Luciano, Lucy Tirrell, and Lily Tirrell. Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Luciano.

Outside the classroom, Dennis embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. An avid runner for many years, he later discovered a passion for cycling and spent countless hours on the road with friends and family. He loved cooking and sharing meals, reading at the beach, watching soccer, and enjoying time with those he loved most. He was a devoted father who rarely missed a game and enthusiastically coached nearly every soccer and basketball team his children played on throughout their youth.

In his later years, Dennis faced Parkinson's disease with remarkable strength and determination. Although the disease gradually limited many of the activities he loved, it never diminished his warmth, intellect, sense of humor, or love for his family.

Dennis will be remembered as a dedicated educator, respected colleague, loyal friend, loving husband, father, grandfather, and coach. His influence lives on in the countless students he taught, the family he cherished, and the many lives he touched through his kindness, wisdom, and generosity.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church in Northborough, Massachusetts, on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Family will be available at 1:00 p.m at the church to receive friends and family wanting to offer their condolences prior to the Mass.

Dennis was a resident of the Coleman House beginning in 2022 and received hospice care through Notre Dame Hospice starting in October 2024. The nursing staff at the Coleman House and the hospice staff at Notre Dame cared for Dennis with extraordinary compassion, dignity, and kindness. Their support meant more to our family than words can express, and over time they became part of our extended family. We are forever grateful for the comfort, friendship, and care they provided throughout Dennis's final years.
