NORTHBOROUGH

NORTHBOROUGH – Effie M. Wood, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 28th with her beloved family by her side. Known to be a strong independent woman, she was happy to call Northborough her home for over 63 years.

Effie was predeceased by her husband, David T. Amidon and her brother, John Liagoure. Effie was proud of the family she raised. Her legacy spans 5 generations. She leaves three children, Edie Diodato of Shrewsbury, Brian Wood and his wife, Lori of Louisville, OH and Laura Chaves and her husband, Jose of Holden; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Nicole, Matthew, Megan, David, Vanessa and Eric; six great grandchildren, Jazlynn, Isabella, Bella, Ariana, Jalen and Sofia; one great-great grandchild, Ziayelli; several nieces and nephews.

As a young child, Effie immigrated from Greece to Ellis Island. She and her brother lived in an orphanage for a short period of time before being taken in by family in Lowell. She graduated from Lowell High School then attended secretarial school. After several years of living in Boston and marrying her children’s father, Effie settled to raise her family in Northborough. Effie worked for 3M and the Town of Northborough before retiring as an executive secretary from Chase Paper Company after employment of over 19 years. She was able to enjoy her retirement for nearly 30 years.

Effie was an avid Red Sox fan. She rarely missed a game. Most recently, as any superstitious fan can relate, Effie was fearful that the Red Sox slow start was because she was not watching. Effie enjoyed baking, crafting, gardening, sewing and quilting as well. She was known for her fresh baked breads, Greek cookies and other delicious dishes. If you lived in her neighborhood, you often received freshly made baked goods and her family never left her home empty handed.

Effie will be incredibly missed. We were blessed to have her in our lives.

The family would like to thank the Northborough Senior Center for their assistance and support provided to Effie over the years.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Northborough Senior Center, 119 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532.

Effie’s family will remember and celebrate her life privately.
