Frederic A. Belec, 79, of Londonderry, VT formerly of Poughkeepsie and Long Island, NY, passed away on February 22, 2016 at Massachusetts General Hospital following a brief illness. A lifelong musician, Fred was a particularly accomplished trumpet player and band director, playing and conducting until shortly before his death. He taught music at Central Islip High School in Central Islip NY, and CW Post College in Old Brookville NY. Fred was Director of Music for the Spackenkill Public Schools in Poughkeepsie NY before retiring in 1998. He had a great love of the outdoors, spending many wonderful years camping and skiing with his family. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 56 years, Lee; his three children: Rick (Melanie) Belec of Southbury CT, Lisa (James) Capecea of Shrewsbury MA and Andrea (Scott) LaJoy of Grand Isle VT; and his mother Genevieve of Bennington VT. Fred is also survived by two grandchildren, Eric (Hannah) and Ramie, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved English Setter, Velvet. He was predeceased by his father Alfred, in addition to many cherished family pets. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to doctors and medical staff in Albany, NY, and Boston, MA, who helped him defeat esophageal cancer in 2013; as well those at the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurology units for their dedication to Fred in his final days. A memorial service to celebrate Fred's life will be held in Windham, VT on March 5th.
