Harold J.
Newman
May 4, 1938 – March 16, 2025
NORTHBOROUGH
Harold "Hal" J. Newman passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, after a brief decline in health. He was 86 years old and the beloved husband of 64 years to Lenora "Lee" P. (Nicholson) Newman. Hal was born and raised in Orange, New Jersey, one of three sons to the late William B. and Florence M. (Koeck) Newman. He attended Seton Hall Preparatory School before continuing his education At St. Peter's University where he studied business. For a short time, prior to relocating to Massachusetts in 1973, Hal and Lee lived in Toms River, NJ where they began their family.
For much of his career Hal worked in insurance, retiring as vice-president of marketing with the Hanover Insurance Company. After retirement from insurance, and not one to stay idle, Hal began a twenty year tenure as a teacher's aide at Shrewsbury's Oak Middle School. Hal looked forward to working with students, and with pride, seeing them succeed. Hal was a longtime member of Saint Rose of Lima Parish where he volunteered as usher, greeter, and member of the bereavement committee. He was a lifelong sports fan, most especially baseball. He enjoyed following the Yankees and during off season, also kept up with the Patriots and Celtics. He looked forward to traveling with Lee. The couple enjoyed several opportunities to explore Europe. They also looked forward to taking cruises to various ports, taking road trips and spontaneous trips to Foxwoods. Hal was known for his corny sense of humor, love of movie classics, his taking on the Wordle of the day and surprising friends and family with an email – just to check in with them.
In addition to his wife, Hal is survived by a daughter Lynda Davis of Northborough and formerly Yelm, WA; six grandchildren Adam Bauchman, Kyle Bauchman, Jacqueline Phelan, Drew Davis, Tristan Davis and Keenan Davis, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Christopher Newman, by his daughter Pamela Bauchman and by two brothers, William and Kenneth Newman.
Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, at Saint Rose of Lima Parish, 244 W. Main Street, Northborough. Burial will follow in Howard Street Cemetery, Northborough.
Hal's family respectfully request memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org)
