Obituary

LEE RICHARD MUNGEAM Lee Richard Mungeam, loving husband of Vera D. (Gross) Mungeam for 72 years, passed away at the age of 93 on November 4,, 2022 after an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease while comforted by his family. Lee was born on January 16, 1929 during a snowstorm while on the way to Clinton Hospital. He was the son of Leonard Richard and Ruth Mabel (Brewer) Mungeam. He grew up on rural Summer Road in Berlin, MA alongside his sisters Gretta and Virginia (both now deceased) and brothers Alan "Babe" (also deceased) and Lawrence "Bud" (living in Marlborough). Growing up in the Depression, he worked from an early age at his grandparent's and parents chicken farm. An enduring childhood memory was the 1938 hurricane, which blocked their dead end street with huge downed trees and blew the roof off the large chicken coop. Aside from his almost four years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, Lee spent his entire life in Berlin. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in South Berlin, then Worcester Boys Trade School before leaving to enlist at the age of 16. He was first assigned to the light cruiser USS Fresno, on which he visited such ports as Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Oslo, Copenhagen and Plymouth in England. It was at Plymouth Hoe Park that Lee met his future bride Vera, who was then in the British Land Army. He was later reassigned to the destroyer USS Hamul in Plymouth. For part of his service he was docked on the Thames River in Greenwich where his job was to transport officers to shore and where he was on duty for the unveiling of the Franklin D. Roosevelt statue in Grosvenor Square, London. He was extremely proud to be a WWII veteran. Upon his service discharge in 1950, Lee returned to Berlin and married Vera who had moved to the U.S. from England. There he built his house, the same house at which he would live with Vera, where they would raise their family and he would peacefully pass away. He leaves Vera, daughter Marsha and her husband Alan Johnston also of Berlin, son Richard and his wife Capri (Bennett) Mungeam of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and son Mark and wife Leslie K. Breault of Douglas, MA. He leaves eight grandchildren; Michael and Timothy Johnston, Laine Mungeam, and Courtney, Ross, Braden, Trevor and Keely Breault Mungeam; and three great grandchildren, Adalind, Deegan and Theo. Lee was predeceased by one grandchild Marcus, son of Richard and Capri. Most of Lee's work career was spent at Fenwal, Inc/Kidde Corporation in Ashland, MA where he was a quality assurance inspector. His later work years were spent traveling to manufacturing plants throughout New England to do source inspections of parts, with many of those trips navigated by Vera. He retired in 1991 and did part time maintenance work at The International Golf Club in Bolton and Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston. He had many interests, including family, golf, walking in the woods, ham radio, Hudson automobiles and reading about WWII. Lee loved the outdoors and his favorite activity was tending to the yard and garden and cutting wood. He loved to use a chainsaw or axe and would scour the back woods for downed branches and dead trees that he could cut and haul back to the house behind a snowmobile or lawn tractor, not without a few incurred injuries in the process. Lee was very handy around the house and could fix almost anything. He also enjoyed assisting son Mark on his projects by flagging tree removals and helping with surveying. Lee was a member of the Tuesday Twi-Light golf league at Berlin Country Club and the Berlin Art and Historical Society. One of his happiest moments was a hole-in-one he made at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club on the 4th hole of the par-3 course. The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Metro West Hospice for their thoughtful care over Lee's final months. Funeral services will be private.
