Nancy Marie Capobianco

Nancy M. Capobianco, of Wayland, formerly of Shrewsbury and Rome and Siena, Italy, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023, at the age of 98. She is survived by her brother, Attorney Robert Capobianco and his wife, Jeanne, of Naples, Florida and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dr. Anthony G. Capobianco of Natick and Westborough and Pat K. Capobianco of Cotuit.

Nancy grew up in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School in 1943. From there she attended Boston University. She worked as a secretary and soon was encouraged to pursue a career in orthoptics. Nancy eventually moved to Italy where she lived and worked for 45 years. In Italy she lived an exciting and productive life, starting a children's clinic, seeing patients in private practice, earning a Ph.D., and becoming a professor at the University of Rome and Associate Professor and Chair of Physiological Optics at the University of Siena. Nancy published numerous scientific journal articles in orthoptics and presented at conferences internationally. She received an honorary medical degree from the University of Milan. Nancy was president of the American Association of Certified Orthoptics in 1955-56 and received several honors and awards. She returned to the US in 1999 upon retirement.

Nancy was a choir member and volunteer at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Northborough, MA.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 16 at St. Rose of Lima Church Parish, 244 W. Main Street, Northborough.
