Obituary

Shrewsbury

Richard F. Murphy passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 1, 2026. He was the devoted husband of 58 years to Maureen "Mitzi" (Flynn) Murphy; beloved father of Kerry Scott and her husband Jeff; and the proud and loving grandfather of Maggie-Anne, Madison, Evan, and Keely, who meant more to him than anything in the world. He is also survived by his loving brother, Thomas Murphy. He was predeceased earlier this year by his sister, Mary "Bonnie" King.

Richard spent his early years in Newton before moving to Framingham, where he graduated from Framingham High School and later earned his law enforcement degree from Northeastern University. He proudly served as a patrolman with the Framingham Police Department for 30 years, a role he loved because it allowed him daily contact with the community he served. After retirement, he continued giving back by working for Greater Marlborough Programs, Inc.

Richard and Mitzi lived in Northborough for 31 years before moving to Shrewsbury, where they have lived for the past 24 years. He was patriotic, loyal, and always ready to help someone in need. Family always came first, meaning he never missed a game, recital, or event where he could cheer on his grandchildren. Though reserved, he was known for his dry humor and for being quite the jokester.

Athletic from a young age, Richard enjoyed running and completed three major marathons, including the Boston Marathon, which he was especially proud of. He and Mitzi loved traveling together, taking many trips, with Ireland being their favorite destination. He loved animals and always had a dog by his side. He also enjoyed spending time with friends on the golf course. Richard was a longtime faithful parishioner of Saint Bernadette's Parish.

Calling hours will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Bernadette's Parish, 266 Main Street, Northborough. Richard will be laid to rest at Howard Street Cemetery in Northborough.

Richard's family respectfully request memorial donations be directed to the Sterling Animal Shelter or Operation Delta Dog in Hollis, NH which helps connect dogs and disabled veterans.
