Northborough - Robert E. Smith, 61, died on September 23, 2013 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 42 years, Catherine (Carr) Smith; his children, Christina Johnson and her husband Paul of Marlborough, Carey Rublesky and her husband Dan of Clinton, Cassie Mosher and her husband Adam of Hillsboro, NH, and Candace Smith of Templeton; his father, Robert E. Smith Sr. of CA; seven grandchildren; Kristi, Carynn, Jake, Mike, Elizabeth, Olivia and Emma; three brothers, David Smith of FL, Michael Smith of CA and Scott Smith of AZ; two sisters, Kathy Monteith of CA and Cynthia Robles of AZ; 11 nieces and nephews. Born in Framingham, raised in Ashland, Bob was the son of the late Florence (Belbusti) Smith. Mr. Smith graduated from Ashland High School in 1969. He lived in Northborough for the past 32 years. Mr. Smith formerly worked at Data General in Southborough. He went on to become Vice President of Program Management and Manufacturing Manager at EMC in Hopkinton from 1989 until his retirement in 1995. Following retirement, Bob worked for Securitas Co. in Shrewsbury. Mr. Smith served in U.S. Air Force from 1972-1980 and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Bob lived for his grandchildren. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2013 from 2-5 p.m. in Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St. Northborough. Bob's funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., in St. Rose of Lima Church, 244 West Main St. Northborough. Burial with military honors will follow in Howard St. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
